A nor'easter announces itself over Woodbury hours before it lands, the wind swinging around and the sky going flat and low above the Delaware. Gary Schwiter Excavating runs snow work through those nights, plowing, opening driveways and lots, taking walkways down to bare pavement and treating the ice that follows behind. Heavy machinery in a low, coastal-plain town where the snow tends to fall wet and dense and sit like wet sand. At first light the satisfaction is unmistakable: a straight cleared drive, the banks pushed back where they belong, somebody able to get out and go to work. Then on to the next address before the next band comes through.
