Woodbine was laid out in the 1890s as a farming colony, and its long, straight avenues still carry a settler's sense of order as they run toward the pinewoods of Belleplain State Forest. The ground here is South Jersey sand, quick to drain and quick to brown, so a green lawn in Woodbine is something earned rather than simply given. JW Lloyd Landscaping puts in that effort through the long Cape May County summers, mowing, trimming and edging until the grass looks settled and full against the pale soil. Late in August, when cicadas rattle in the oaks and the noon air smells of pitch pine, a just-cut yard on one of these avenues looks every bit as hopeful as the colony's first plowed fields must have. Out here the town ends where the trees begin, and a tended lawn is how a house shows it is lived in and loved.
