North of the borough the country turns to water — Hopatcong wide and bright past Mount Arlington, ponds tucked into every fold of the hills — and the air coming off it colors the whole season. Lakeland Landscaping works that stretch of Morris County out of Wharton: mowing and trimming, mulch and bed edging, cleanups at both ends of the year. Winter takes over the other half of the calendar, plowing driveways and parking areas, clearing porch stairs and paths, laying salt on the sloped drives above the lake road. Weather comes up the valley and lingers here longer than it does east of the ridge, so the trucks go out early and then go out again. What lasts is plain enough: grass kept even all summer, a driveway open before anybody needs it.
