The railroad cuts Westfield in two, North Avenue on one side and South on the other, and on a December night after a storm both halves want the same thing at the same time. Haughey Brothers Landscaping splits the town up and gets after it — plowing driveways, clearing walks and steps down to pavement, salting the slick spots that form where a downspout drains across concrete. By April the equipment changes and the route stays: mowing, edging, trimming, spring cleanups, and leaves in the fall carried off before the first hard frost pins them down. There is a particular satisfaction in a street where every house on the list is finished. Westfield is small enough to know block by block.
