At four in the morning the Ramapo ridgelines are just a darker shape against the sky, and Wanaque's driveways are still under everything that fell overnight. Scenic Landscaping is out in that hour with plow and shovel, cutting drives and walkways open and salting the ice that forms where runoff crosses a slope. Snow arrives heavy up here and it arrives early, because a borough tucked against the mountains gets its winter before the valley does. By May the same trucks are on lawn care: mowing, trimming, edging, and the seasonal cleanups that put a yard back in order. One borough, two seasons of work, and both judged the same way, by how the place looks when the truck pulls out.
