Up in North Vineland the streets run one into the next, and by nine on a Saturday you can hear the whole neighborhood being tended. Gary's Lawn Service is part of that sound — mowing, edging, trimming, the driveway left clean before the truck pulls to the next house on the route. Come winter the route stays but the work turns over: plow down the drive, shovel across the front walk and steps, salt where the sun never reaches. It is a plain arrangement and a good one, the same yards looked after whether they are green or under six inches. People come to know the truck, and that is most of it.
