There is a sound Vineland only makes a few nights a winter: a steel blade finding the seam of a driveway and the whole street going quiet under it. Ben's ProServ is out for those nights — plowing driveways and lots, shoveling walks and stairs down to the surface, spreading salt where the melt would otherwise turn to glass by morning. Along Wheat Road and the open farm ground, wind lifts loose snow and lays it back across everything already cleared, which is simply part of the deal. The city is enormous and mostly level, so the routes run long and start early. By the time the sun comes up thin over the fields, the way out is already open.
