Where the Appalachian Trail comes off the ridge and crosses the wet meadow on the Pochuck boardwalk, October announces itself as a smell before it is ever a color. Notchwood Landscape runs the turn of the year from both directions: mowing, trimming and edging through the growing months, then leaf cleanups, then the first night the forecast means business and the plow goes back on the truck. Storms come up this valley and stall against the high ground, so clearing a driveway in Vernon is rarely one long night — it's a push, a wait, another push, and ice treated at the walk before the truck leaves. There's a particular satisfaction to that second pass at four in the morning, when the drive lies black and wet and the banks are stacked square on either side. Spring swings back around, the mowers come out, and the same properties get the same attention in a different key.
