There is an hour in February, long before the buses run, when McAfee is nothing but a blade scraping pavement and an orange beacon sweeping across a barn wall. Mikulik Lawn and Landscape LLC works that hour — pushing driveways back down to the surface, opening a path to the door, salting the walk so the first person out doesn't have to think about it. Come April the same trucks trade the blade for mowers and the route turns green: cutting, trimming, edging, and hauling off whatever winter tore loose on the flanks of Hamburg Mountain. Vernon asks for both halves of that and asks in earnest, since the elevation up here collects snow the rest of New Jersey never sees. The reward is identical in either season — somebody steps outside, and the ground is ready for them.
