Route 94 runs the whole length of the Vernon valley, and on a June morning the ballfield grass at Maple Grange holds the night's damp until the sun finally gets over the ridge. All American Landscape & Maintenance keeps to those early hours, mowing while the air is still cool and the ground firm enough to take a wheel without printing it. Vernon soil is glacial and generous — a lawn here will run hard all summer if somebody stays in rhythm with it, and holding that rhythm is most of the job. The route covers mowing, string trimming along fence lines and foundations, edging the walks until the line between turf and pavement is drawn sharp, and clearing the clippings off the drive before the truck pulls out. What they want when they leave is a yard that reads cared-for from the road, and still reads that way a week later.
