January along the Tuckahoe River gets quiet in a way the shore towns never manage — pines holding their load of snow, the marsh gone stiff and pale, the road out toward Petersburg empty in both directions. Mike's Landscaping owns that morning: plow down the long sand lanes, shovel the walk clear to the door, salt the shaded stretch that would keep ice all day otherwise. When the thaw arrives the work turns green — mowing, trimming, edging, mulch in the beds, and clearing up after the pines drop needles and the oaks drop everything else. Autumn out here is cordgrass turning gold across the meadows, and the last cuts of the year go in under that color. Clearing a drive before anyone is awake, then cutting the same lawn in July, is knowing a place both ways.
