For about ten days each April, Anderson Park turns pink and half of Upper Montclair drives past slowly just to look at it. Duke's Lawn Care is out in that same window doing the year's first real work: the opening cut, beds edged and mulched, winter's grit raked off the turf along the walks. From there it becomes steady scheduled mowing, trimming, hedges held square, and leaf work once the oaks make up their minds. The lawns here sit under old trees on the slope of the first Watchung ridge, so shade, root and drainage all have strong opinions about how grass should grow. Working with that instead of against it is what keeps a yard thick from cherry blossom clear through Thanksgiving.
