Mill Hill wakes early in April, the brick rowhouses catching sun first and the narrow courtyards behind them still cold at the bottom. Byron's G Landscaping is at home in that geometry, working the tight side yards and pocket gardens of old Trenton where every planted foot counts and the gate is barely wide enough for a mower. Spring is turning beds, cutting a fresh mulch line, taking the winter's litter out of the ivy, and giving the first cut of the year to grass that has been waiting since November. Through the season it is steady mowing and trimming, hedges kept square, walkways swept clean at the end of each visit. Small city gardens can look as considered as any lawn out on the county roads, and that is the point of the work.
