A few miles east of here the Atlantic decides most of what winter will be, and Tinton Falls hears about it first as a change in the wind — wet, salted, heavier than any inland cold. Twin Resources Inc. watches those storms track up the shore and puts trucks out while the first flakes are still melting on the pavement. Snow that piles along the Wayside rise and down in the Hockhockson Brook lowlands is dense, stubborn stuff, and moving it takes steady repeated passes rather than heroics: plowing, shoveling the tight corners by hand, salting the slope where a car would otherwise drift sideways. Overnight and into the small hours, until every driveway and lot on the list is open to bare ground. There is a real satisfaction in a stretch of pavement that looks like the storm simply skipped it.
