On a late August evening the breeze comes down off Baltusrol Mountain and moves through Springfield as if it has somewhere to be, which makes this a fitting town for a crew called Fairwinds Landscaping. Below the ridge, the wooded slopes of the Watchung Reservation hold the summer air, and the lawns on the hillside streets catch the last of the light. Fairwinds keeps those lawns mowed to an even height and trimmed clean where grass meets fence post and flower bed. There is real satisfaction in a lawn that looks right when the porch lights come on, every stripe lined up and not a blade left on the flagstones. In a town of golf fairways and wooded hills, that kind of finish belongs.
