Winter comes into South Plainfield on a low gray ceiling sliding down off the Watchung ridge, and by the time the first flakes reach Hadley Road the trucks are already warm. A-Tech Landscape Design runs the borough's snow work — wide commercial aprons, tight residential driveways, the walkways that have to be open before anyone's alarm goes off. There is real pleasure in watching a lot go from featureless white to clean black asphalt with the windrows stacked exactly where they won't be in the way. Salt goes down in the shaded corners where meltwater likes to come back as ice after dark. The part that matters most is never seen: a door opening at seven, a driveway already clear, a morning that simply proceeds.
