South Hackensack is a working square mile between the river and the truck routes, where lawns tuck in behind fences and beside loading doors and get noticed most when nobody tends them. Quench Irrigation looks after that green — mowing and trimming on a schedule tight enough to fit around a Bergen County workday. In winter the same attention goes to snow: lots and drives opened early, so the first shift is not standing in slush at six in the morning. There is dignity in a narrow strip of grass kept sharp against all that asphalt. Somebody has to care about it, and that is the job.
