By late October the wooded slope above Short Hills turns the color of a struck match, and the lawns below spend a month underneath it. Royal Tree Service keeps those yards cut and clear through the long fall, mowing while the grass still grows and tidying the beds as the light goes low and sideways. Come winter the same trucks head out for snow, opening drives and walks on streets where the hills make every storm a little more serious than the forecast said. A clean lawn under bare branches is a good thing to come home to; so is a path scraped to the front step at five in the morning. Both are the same errand — making a place usable and good to look at.
