Everything on Long Beach Island comes ashore through Ship Bottom, where the Causeway sets you down between the ocean and the bay with sky on every side. Kline Brothers Landscaping tends the small bright lawns of that crossing town, grass grown tough in sand and salt wind, cut close and squared off at the walk. Winter empties the island and the storms arrive sideways off the water; that is when driveways and drifted paths get cleared so a house can be reached at all. A barrier island asks you to show up in weather nobody else is out in, and the trucks go out anyway. The reward is the first warm Saturday, everything mowed and edged, the whole street smelling like cut grass and low tide.
