The Black River starts small in the low ground near Succasunna and barely makes a sound, which is about how dawn arrives in Roxbury — quietly, with mist standing off the meadows. Tico's Lawncare is usually out by then, mowing, trimming, edging and clearing yards through the green season, and plowing driveways, shoveling walks and salting once the cold sets in for good. Early starts are the trick in summer, ahead of the heat and ahead of the day filling up. In winter they are not a choice: the drive has to be open before anyone needs it.
