In January the benches at Van Neste Square wear white caps, and the driveways around them have to be open before the school buses run. Village Landscaping plows and shovels those mornings, clearing walks and steps and salting the slick spots, then trades all of it for mowers by the time Graydon's gates open in June. Summer here is mowing, edging, trimming and beds kept clean; autumn is leaves, and Ridgewood makes a great many of them. The village has its own look — deep lawns, old trees, short front walks — and the work is meant to sit inside that rather than shout over it. Two kinds of labor, one steady result.
