West of the borough the land opens toward Hillsborough and the branches of the Raritan, and that is where a February storm shows its hand first: wind across bare ground, then snow arriving sideways. Nalution watches it come and goes out ahead of it, plowing driveways and lots, shoveling by hand wherever a blade cannot reach. Long storms get more than one pass, because six inches cleared twice is easier on everybody than twelve cleared once. Salt goes at the thresholds and on the sloped drives, where a noon thaw turns to glass by dark. When the work is done the pavement is pavement again, and the day gets to happen on schedule.
