Saturday morning at the Hopelawn end of town, and half the block is outside — cars washed in driveways, somebody's radio going, the smell of cut grass moving up the street ahead of the mower. K.N Outdoor services keeps lawns on this side of Perth Amboy and out toward Fords, mowing and trimming on a schedule so nobody has to think about it. The yards are not big. That's the point: a small lawn shows every wobble, so the passes have to be straight and the trim line has to hold along the chain link. By noon the driveway is swept, the clippings are gone, and the yard looks the way people mean it to look when they picture it.
