East of Penns Grove the houses thin out and the fields take over toward Woodstown, and in late October that whole run of country turns brown and gold at once. The J Boys Inc. is out in it — finishing the mowing season, edging, trimming, hauling the leaf off lawns before the first hard rain packs it flat. Then the calendar flips and it becomes plow blades, shovels and salt across drives, lots and walks from Route 130 back into the neighborhoods. Farm-country weather doesn't negotiate; you meet it when it shows up or you don't. Meeting it, and leaving a place looking squared away either way, is the job.
