Pennington's Main Street keeps its old clapboard houses close to the sidewalk, which means the lawns in front of them are small, wholly visible, and impossible to fake. Roman Lawn and Outdoor Services gives those narrow strips the same attention as the wide lots out toward the township — mowing, edging along the concrete, trimming tight to porch steps and iron fences. Late August is when the difference shows most, the season worn thin everywhere except where somebody kept after it. Spring and fall cleanups take the heavier turns of the year, from winter debris in the beds to the last of the leaves off the grass. Short blocks, close neighbors, and every clean edge counted.
