The North Branch of the Rancocas runs slow and tea-dark past Pemberton, and the old rail bed beside it is a walking trail now, running straight through town. One direction landscaping mows the yards on either side of it, cutting, edging along drives and walks, trimming where sandy ground gives way to grass, and clearing up before pulling out. Pine Barrens soil drains fast, so a lawn here can go from soft to crisp inside a week, and the schedule bends to that. Cleanups in April and again in November handle the pine needles and the leaves that gather along the fences. A cut lawn on a still Burlington County afternoon is a plain and good thing to look at.
