One person, one truck, and a route through the small back gardens and front squares of Paterson — that is the shape of Man around the garden. Through the warm months it means mowing, trimming, weeding beds and keeping the shrubs in bounds behind the two-families and along the narrow drives. Come a November dusk, when the light goes early and the first cold rain turns to something heavier overnight, the same hands are out with a shovel and a bag of salt clearing walks and drives. Working alone means every corner is your corner and nothing gets passed off to somebody else. Small yards, done properly, one at a time — the city is full of them and they all deserve it.
