The morning after a rain, the sand roads out toward the pines pack down hard and the cedar water standing in the ditches runs the color of strong tea. Axowel Landscaping starts on days like that, when the ground is soft enough to trim clean and the air still smells like pitch pine. The work is mowing, trimming, edging and hauling off what the season leaves behind — pine needles in spring, oak leaves in November, the branch that came down in the last blow. A lawn kept up in the Pinelands has to be worked with the sand rather than against it, cut a little high, watched through the dry weeks. The reward is a green square in the middle of all that scrub, and that's a satisfying thing to hand back to somebody.
