The Ramapo hills left Oakland a great deal of stone — walls along the property lines, ledge beneath the lawns, boulders the driveways had to go around. Stonetown Construction reads that terrain in winter, when a plow has to know exactly where the ground stops being forgiving: driveways cleared to the pavement, walks and steps shoveled out, salt on the shaded runs where ice sets in first. A December morning with the drive already open and the old walls wearing four clean inches is a fair picture of a job done. Snow routes cover Oakland and reach into Wanaque, Ringwood and Franklin Lakes.
