The hills on Oakland's west side put a pitch in nearly every driveway, and a pitch changes the work in both seasons. Maco Landscape reads those grades — mowing across a slope in clean overlapping passes, trimming and edging where the lawn meets stone and asphalt, cleanups in spring and again once the leaves finish. In winter the same slopes get plowed with the runoff in mind, walks shoveled, salt laid where meltwater will refreeze by evening. It is unglamorous arithmetic, and getting it right is what makes a steep driveway ordinary. Oakland, Butler, Bloomingdale and Pompton Lakes are the regular rounds.
