Snow reaches Oakland from the northwest, over the ridge where Skyline Drive climbs out of town, and it almost always arrives at an hour nobody chose. DeBoer Landscapes meets it: driveways plowed end to end, walkways and steps shoveled, salt laid on the slick spots that form where a grade runs into a shaded curb. There is a quiet pride in the sound of a blade at two in the morning and a driveway that is simply open by breakfast, as though winter had politely stepped aside. Snow work runs across Oakland and out to Mahwah, Wanaque and Pompton Lakes.
