The road toward Swartswood runs out of Newton past meadows that hum all June, and the afternoons out there smell like cut grass and warm stone. Fields of Lavender tends lawns with a gardener's eye: mowing at a height that keeps the turf cool, trimming carefully around plantings rather than through them, edging beds so their shapes stay legible. Little decisions accumulate — where to turn the mower, which way to throw the clippings — and by August the difference is easy to see. Spring and fall cleanups bookend the year, beds opened up in April and put in order come October. It is soft work, done attentively, on ground that gives a great deal back.
