Cold air slides down off the long ridge east of town and pools in the hollows around Newfoundland, so the first frost arrives here days ahead of anywhere flatter. Ziggy's Lawn and Landscape LLC works right up to that line and well past it — mowing, trimming and cleanups through the growing season, then plowing and salting once the ground goes hard. Winter in these hills is never a single event; it is a series of them, and the drives and walkways get cleared each time around. Then April swings back, the hollows green up first, and the mowers go out again. The year here comes in two halves, and both of them are outdoor work.
