The Traction Line runs straight as a ruler out of Morristown toward Madison, an old trolley bed turned footpath, and it makes a good calendar. In January it is a white corridor between the trees, the hour when Unlimited Landscape Services, LLC is out plowing driveways, clearing lots and salting walks so the day can begin on schedule. In April the same path is loud with birds, and the trucks carry mowers instead of blades — cutting, edging, laying mulch, pulling winter's debris out of the beds. Summer settles into a weekly rhythm, and by late fall it is leaves again, gathered and gone before the first freeze sets them in place. One property, four turns of the year, all of it handled by the same people who know where the shade sits and which slope holds ice.
