A nor'easter comes into Montclair sideways off the ridge, and the first Watchung crest takes an inch or two more than the towns below it ever see. Strictly Snow and Ice Management works the hours nobody else wants — three in the morning, headlights and orange strobes, lots and driveways pushed open while the storm is still going. Ice is the harder half of the job here: meltwater runs downhill, refreezes on the aprons overnight, and has to be salted before it catches anyone out. By the time the shops on Church Street unlock, the pavement is black and wet and the piles are stacked where they won't block a sightline.
