Milford climbs fast from the water — a couple of blocks of level ground, then a hillside, so half the lawns here are worked on a slope. Ercolano's Landscaping cuts them through the long green middle of June, when everything wants to grow twice a week and the hills hold the heat into the evening. Mowing, trimming, edging, and the cleanups at either end of the season: spring's winter debris, autumn's leaves. On a steep yard the whole craft shows in the stripes staying straight and the border staying clean. It is steady, sweaty, satisfying work in a town where you can hear the river from most of it.
