Designing landscapes in a borough of 1.6 square miles means working in inches — where the walk meets the lawn, how a bed line turns at the corner of the porch, which sightline off the front step is worth keeping open. Yost Design Landscape Architecture draws for Midland Park's close-set Bergen County lots and then keeps what it draws alive, through planting, bed care, mulch, edging and mowing, so the composition holds as it fills in. A plan is a wager on time: the shrub that looks sparse in May reads correctly in its third summer, and the lawn shape only makes full sense once the tree has grown into it. The pleasure is in the return visit, standing on a walk that looks like it was always going to be there. Good ground rewards patience, and this town has a great deal of it.
