The Hackensack River runs just east of Maywood, and when the wind comes off it in late October the borough's maples let go over three or four days — front yards, gutters and curb lines all at once. The Vineyards Contracting handles that push and the seasons on either side of it: mowing through summer, edging and trimming, bed weeding and mulch, and leaves hauled away instead of blown into the street. There is something satisfying about a lawn that comes out from under all that color still green and cut short for winter. Spring starts the cycle over with a cleanup and a first pass across the yard. Maywood, Rochelle Park, River Edge, Hackensack, Paramus and Lodi are all on the route.
