On a raw spring afternoon the wind comes up from the Estell Manor meadows, rattles the last brown leaves out of the oaks, and Mays Landing lawns wake all at once. Shore Lawn opens the year there with first cuts, edges re-cut where winter blurred them, trimming along fences, and beds cleared of whatever blew in. Through summer it settles into a weekly rhythm; by fall it is leaf clearing and short days that make an early start worth having. Grass this close to the coastal plain comes up quick and thin, and keeping it thick is mostly a matter of never scalping it. Mays Landing is home base, with Hamilton Township, Egg Harbor Township and Corbin City in reach.
