A nor'easter announces itself in Manasquan hours ahead: the wind swings around, the air over the inlet goes metal-colored, and the first flakes come in sideways off the Atlantic. Burke Environmental Inc is staged before it lands, plowing driveways and lots while the storm is still stacking up, because at the shore the snow falls wet and heavy and does not wait politely. Walks get shoveled down to the concrete, blacktop gets salted, and the piles go where they will not block a sightline. Somewhere near four in the morning the town is nothing but engine noise and headlights on falling snow. Come daylight, Manasquan wakes to driveways that are simply open, which is the whole ambition.
