On the mainland side of the causeway, Manahawkin keeps its own light — salt marsh gold in the late afternoon, the bay a bright line beyond the reeds. JP'S Landscaping LLC works the yards between Route 72 and the meadows, where grass runs fast in the humid stretch of July and the wind off Barnegat Bay never quite stops moving the tops of the pitch pines. The work is mowing and trimming, edges cut clean along the walk, beds mulched dark so the green reads greener. Spring cleanups open a yard back up after a winter of blown sand and leaf litter; fall cleanups close it down again. There is real satisfaction in a lawn that looks finished from the street — the kind of yard someone notices on the drive home from the island.
