Winter arrives in Villas sideways, straight off the Delaware Bay, and the streets that run down toward the water fill in first. Boyes Lawncare is out in it before the sky lightens, plowing driveways and clearing walks so that getting to Route 9 is nothing more than a decision. Rock salt goes down at the foot of the drive, where runoff likes to freeze again by evening, and the piles get pushed clear of where cars have to turn. Come April the same trucks trade blades for mowers, and the season turns to weekly cutting, string-trimmed edges and cleanups that pull the winter's litter out of the beds. It is one yard, watched the whole way around the calendar.
