The Great Swamp begins where Long Hill's back yards end, and by late March the peepers start up loud enough to hear through a shut window. Ant's Plants works that edge of the township — planting and bed care, lawn mowing, edging and trimming, cleanups at both turns of the year, and plowing and salting when the road up out of the basin ices before anywhere else. Ground this close to the refuge holds water, so mowing follows the dry line and beds get built where they can breathe. Done that way, a yard comes back stronger each spring instead of thinning out in the wet corners. Every so often a heron drifts over the job, and the whole afternoon feels borrowed from somewhere wilder.
