September in West End is the quietest month of the year — the crowds thin along Brighton Avenue, the light turns gold by four, and the lawns finally get to relax. JR Natale landscaping does some of its steadiest work then: mowing at a lower blade, trimming what got leggy in the heat, edging walkways back to a hard, honest border, tidying beds before the leaves arrive. There's a pleasure in a yard that's had a full season of care and shows it. Nothing dramatic — just grass lying flat and even, and edges that look drawn on. Then October comes and the whole thing runs in reverse.
