The name Little Ferry comes from a crossing on the Hackensack, and the town's old clay pits still hold water out past the pond bank. H&M landscaping covers both seasons on this side of the river: plowing, shoveling and salting when the wind comes across the meadows with nothing at all to slow it, then mowing, trimming and cleanups the rest of the year. Snow at sea level lands heavy and wet, the kind that packs at the apron of a driveway and has to be pushed rather than brushed. Getting a household out the door by seven means starting long before seven, and there is a plain pride in a curb-to-garage cut that holds all day. Come May the same trucks are back carrying mowers, and the work turns green again.
