About Great Notch Yard

Above Little Falls the first Watchung ridge splits at Great Notch, and the road climbs through the gap with the whole valley opening behind it. Great Notch Yard keeps lawns on both sides of that grade — mowing, edging, hedge and shrub trimming, and the leaf work that closes out the year. Late-day sun comes over the ridge slantwise in September, and every mown stripe shows in it. Hillside grass asks a different line than flat ground; you learn where to turn the machine and where to let it run. The reward is small and repeatable, a lawn that holds its shape right up until the next visit.
