Along Route 9, Little Egg Harbor is the seam where the Pinelands give way to salt marsh — pitch pine on one side, phragmites and open sky on the other. Hands Garden Center keeps lawns going in that in-between ground, mowing, edging and trimming through the length of the season. May is when it all breaks open: the oaks leaf out late here, the marsh greens overnight, and every yard in the township seems to need attention the same week. Working through it in order, lawn by lawn, is how a place goes from shaggy to squared away. By the end of the month the streets look like summer is expected.
