By late October, Lavallette lets go of its crowd, the ocean turns the color of slate, and the little lawns along the numbered avenues finally have the town to themselves. Pine and Palm Landscaping keeps them going through it — mowing, edging and trimming on lots measured in feet rather than acres, where a straight line shows and a missed corner shows more. Island soil holds little and drains fast, so the grass here is worked for rather than inherited. Watch the light drop behind the bay side and you can see why the trimming gets done thoroughly: a tidy strip of green against pale sand and grey water reads like the place is being looked after. Block by block, that is the ambition.
