Clifton Avenue changes character four times a year, and Alberto Landscaping and Tree Service is out for all four of them. In the warm months it is mowing and edging on the side streets running off downtown, string trimmer around the sign posts and hydrants, cuttings swept back off the sidewalk where people actually walk. Come December the same trucks carry a blade and bagged salt, opening driveways and walks before the shops switch their lights on. Storms in this corner of New Jersey tend to come in wet and leave a crust behind, so the second visit matters as much as the first. Either season, the measure holds: somebody steps outside and never has to think about it.
