By the middle of May, Route 9 through Lacey Township smells like cut grass and wet potting soil, and everybody's weekend has a plan attached to it. Hammett's Landscaping & Garden Center meets that season on both sides of the counter — a garden center out front and a landscaping and lawn-care operation working the yards behind it. That means mowing kept on rhythm, trimming and edging where the lawn meets the walk, beds shaped and mulched so the plantings have room to do their part. Sandy ground and salt air ask a lot of a yard down here, and the reward for tending it is a property that looks composed from the street on an ordinary Thursday. Spring and fall bring the cleanups; the weeks between bring the steady cut. It is garden work and lawn work, running together the way they do in a shore town.
